Tips On How To Achieve A Minimal Living Room

March 13, 2014 Rachel

Minimalist home decor has become a contemporary reality and the preferred option for most home owners. The living room is one of those places in the home that is always the focal point of a home. It garners the most attention when one has guests over and is an essential part of the home’s attitude and personality. What does one have to do when looking to achieve a minimal living room? Let’s take a look at a series of tips one can follow in order to have that preferred aesthetic appearance.

Furniture

This is the best place to begin when trying to reduce the amount of clutter in the living room. A lot of unnecessary items can start to take up space in the living room that could be removed without being missed.

It is important to sit back and note down all of those items that are taking up space in the living room without serving a purpose beyond restricting mobility.

The essentials are an important part of any living room and should be focused upon when redecorating. Things such as the sofa and table should be the main part of the room. Anything outside of this can be listed as “excess” and should be removed unless there is a proper reason for its use. These questions have to be answered by the home owner prior to making a decision.

Walls

The eye will usually move from the furniture to the wall when walking into the living room. It is important to make sure there aren’t too many things hanging around on the wall for no reason at all.

This can start to take away from the appeal of the room and make it look cluttered. If there are too many paintings on the wall, it is important to take them off. The same goes for larger paintings that tend to cover an entire part of the wall. This does not link up well with the minimalist look and should be taken down.

Simple Colors

Many times, home owners will get carried away with the colors in their living room. This is a huge mistake and tends to take away from the beauty of the living space.

It is better to go with simple and correlating colors that are easy on the eye. Instead of going for a wide array of colors, go with something simple and straightforward. A nice black and white combination is often preferred, but is not the only option out there. Anything simple works and has its own charm.

Be Willing To Make Changes

There is nothing more important than being able to sit back and assess the situation. Let it sink in for a while and use the living room. Does it look good? Does it have the same appeal as it did a few days ago?

These are questions that have to be answered in order to made changes. It is similar to an editing process when one is writing an essay in school. The first draft is often not good enough and does not cut it. The same goes for the living room.
